Petrol & Fuel Cost Singapore 2026: Monthly Calculator

Monthly petrol cost equals distance driven ÷ real-world fuel economy × the effective price per litre. A driver covering 1,200 km a month in a car that achieves 12 km/L uses about 100 litres. At an example price of $3.40 per litre before discounts, that is about $340 a month.

Replace all three inputs with your own numbers. Pump prices and card discounts change, and your actual fuel economy may differ substantially from the label result.

Fuel cost formulas

Monthly cost = monthly km ÷ km/L × price per litre

Cost per km = price per litre ÷ km/L

Convert L/100 km to km/L = 100 ÷ L/100 km

Monthly petrol cost examples

The table uses $3.40 per litre as a transparent planning input, not a live price quote. Enter the price you actually pay after any station, membership and card discounts.

These are worked examples, not estimates of what every Singapore driver spends. Mileage, vehicle type, traffic, load and fuel grade all change the result.

Calculate your real fuel economy

The most useful input comes from your own car. Use a tank-to-tank calculation:

  1. Fill the tank and reset the trip meter.
  2. Drive normally until the next fill.
  3. Record the kilometres travelled and litres added.
  4. Divide kilometres by litres to get km/L.
  5. Repeat for three fills and average the results.

For example, 540 km divided by 45 litres is 12 km/L. If your dashboard uses L/100 km, 8.3 L/100 km is about 12 km/L because 100 ÷ 8.3 is approximately 12.

Cost per kilometre

Cost per km makes vehicle and travel comparisons easier. At $3.40 per litre:

Real-world economyFuel cost per kmFuel cost per 10,000 km
9 km/L37.8¢$3,778
12 km/L28.3¢$2,833
15 km/L22.7¢$2,267
18 km/L18.9¢$1,889

The difference between 9 km/L and 15 km/L is about $1,511 over 10,000 km at this example price. Compare that saving with the purchase price, depreciation, financing and insurance difference before changing cars purely for fuel economy.

Use the effective pump price

Published station prices are only the starting point. The effective price is what appears after the discounts you can reliably obtain. Avoid building a budget around a temporary promotion or a card you would not otherwise use.

  1. Check the grade required by your vehicle manual.
  2. Compare current prices using station websites or the Price Kaki app linked by LTA.
  3. Apply only recurring discounts you qualify for.
  4. Keep a higher-price case in your budget.

A useful stress test is to add 30 cents per litre. For the 1,200 km, 12 km/L example, each 30-cent increase adds $30 a month.

Why your result differs from the fuel label

LTA’s fuel-cost calculator lets buyers compare models and expected yearly fuel costs, while warning that actual values vary with driving patterns and vehicle load. Real-world economy can be affected by:

Use the label to compare vehicles under a consistent test. Use your own tank-to-tank record for the household budget.

Petrol grade: 92, 95, 98 or premium?

Follow the minimum octane requirement in the vehicle manual. A higher octane number is not a universal measure of better fuel economy. If the manufacturer does not require premium fuel, compare its extra cost with any measured improvement rather than assuming it saves money.

Example: if 98-octane petrol costs 50 cents more per litre, a car using 100 litres a month needs to save more than $50 in fuel consumption for the switch to reduce total spend.

How fuel fits into total car cost

Fuel is visible because it is paid frequently, but it is only one part of ownership. Add it to parking, ERP, road tax, insurance, servicing, financing and depreciation. Use the true monthly cost of owning a car for the full cashflow view.

For a car-versus-alternative decision, combine fuel with every fixed cost. Saving $80 a month at the pump does not compensate for hundreds of dollars of additional monthly depreciation.

Ways to reduce fuel cost

FAQ

How do I calculate monthly petrol cost in Singapore?

Divide monthly distance by real-world km/L, then multiply by the effective price per litre. At 1,200 km, 12 km/L and $3.40/L, the result is $340 a month.

How much petrol does a car use per kilometre?

Divide price per litre by km/L. At $3.40/L and 12 km/L, fuel costs about 28.3 cents per km.

Should I use the brochure fuel economy?

Use it for comparing models. For budgeting, your own tank-to-tank average is better because traffic, load and driving patterns affect actual consumption.

Does premium petrol reduce total fuel cost?

Not automatically. Use the minimum grade specified by the manufacturer and measure whether any efficiency gain outweighs the higher price.
